ARC: Doll Parts – Cara Dee Book Review (The Game #4) + Excerpt

Synopsis:

Get ready for a funhouse experience that doesn’t belong in an amusement park. But clowns and balloons don’t turn this scorching hot BDSM romance into a wild ride. That’s all Noa, Cam, Lucian, and KC.

I have the best boyfriend in the whole world, but there’s one thing I won’t tell him. It’s that I don’t believe in absolute happiness anymore. Not with the cards we’ve been dealt. I mean, come on! Why do we fall for people who don’t want us back? While he’s been pining after Lucian, one of the Masters in his kink community, I’m the lovesick monster-puppy Little who can’t forget my former stepdad KC. Or the kinky porn I once found on his computer…but that’s beside the point!

It’s complicated, to be honest. I try not to think about it. I have Cameron, and I love him so damn much. Why can’t we try to make it on our own? Why does he want us to find a Top that’s just ours? It won’t work. Our stupid hearts refuse to move on.

What’s even stupider is that Cameron insists we seek out a Dom for our relationship in the very kink community where we can find both KC and Lucian.

Ohhh crap. I think he’s got a plan.

The Game Series is a BDSM series where romance meets the reality of kink. Sometimes we fall for someone we don’t match with, sometimes vanilla business gets in the way of kinky pleasure, and sometimes we have to compromise and push ourselves to overcome trauma and insecurities. No matter what, two things are certain. This is not a perfect world, and life never turns out the way you planned.

Review:

I’ve enjoyed all of the books in this series so far so I was excited to hear about the release of Doll Parts!

I’m fairly familiar with Cara Dee’s books and I know they tend to be unique, sexy and also very cute. While I have really enjoyed the other stories in this series, I have to say that Doll Parts wasn’t as big of a hit for me as the others were. Nevertheless, it was enjoyable and I’m certainly interested in reading more in this series!

Doll Parts was hot as hell but I wanted more from the romance!

First of all, I liked the storyline. It seemed like it would make for an exciting story with that bit of a taboo element tossed in and some second chance romance and it definitely was exciting but it fell short in the development. Unfortunately, I didn’t have any connection with the characters or feel a genuine connection between them.

Out of the four characters, Noa was only slightly more developed than all the others in my opinion but that left me wanting to know more about Cam, Lucian and KC. When you’re writing a book where the relationship has several people, you want to really take the time to flesh each and every one of them out so that the reader can get a sense of who they are and build a connection with them but that part seemed to be glossed over because I felt like I missed out on a lot. It was kind of taken for granted that the history between KC & Noa and Lucian & Cam would speak for themselves and tell us everything we needed to know about the guys and their relationship but that didn’t work for me. As a result, I never was able to full connect with them.

I also felt like the romance was a little hard to buy into. I could understand the attraction between them and affection/friendship but love felt like a bit of a stretch. Things moved really quickly and I just never felt like they took the time to fall for one another, rather it seemed like everyone already loved each other in an insta-love kind of way and nothing actually evolved besides them officially getting together. I don’t know how else to explain it, not enough happened. It all just kind of blended together for me.

My other thing is with the relationship between the four of them. I never quite felt like it was an MMMM romance, it felt more like a bunch of couples. I don’t think enough time was spent developing the relationship between KC & Cam, KC & Lucian and Lucian & Noa. As a whole, I was just a little disappointed with the characters and their romance.

I did however like the lightheartedness of the story and the steam which was really well done of course. It wasn’t a bad book by any means, it just wasn’t as interesting as I was expecting it to be. Honestly, at this point I’m noticing that the books in this series are kind of blending into one another so that might be my problem. They all just seem too similar and follow a similar pattern.

Steamy and sweet Doll Parts is a fun and quick read but it just didn’t quite meet my expectations.

Overall, I had a nice time reading this book and it was fun to read the cute and sassy banter but I was little disappointed that I didn’t love it. In the end, it ended up being an OK read but not much more than that. It needed a lot more character and relationship development for me to have fallen head over heals with the story but I do think it’ll be a hit for many readers. I am giving Doll Parts 3.75 stars would recommend it to fans of MMMM romance with BDSM elements.

I couldn’t go up there, could I?
I squinted for the sun and peered up at the pale-green–painted trendy restaurant, all three stories of it, including the rooftop terrace. It was one of those restaurants that used to be an apartment building, so you had a bunch of smaller dining areas inside.
I chewed on the inside of my cheek and wondered how the hell I hadn’t connected the dots sooner.
Fuck, it was hot. I ran a hand through my hair and looked around me. The restaurant was right on the corner of a busy intersection, and the sleepy locals on their way to brunch were sharing the sidewalk with tourists.
Maybe I should text him and call it off…
“Excuse me, are you going to the munch?”
I cocked my head to the guy to my left. He was about my age, I estimated. “What if I didn’t know what a munch was?”
He grinned, and it was hot. Hot and cute. “I would’ve said never mind and hightailed it out of here,” he replied. “But I’ve been around long enough to spot someone too nervous to join an event.”
Oh. I wasn’t nervous to join an event. My very first munch, I’d been the first to arrive.
I scratched my head. “I’m stalling because I’m pretty sure I’m barging into someone else’s territory,” I admitted. “My mom’s ex-husband is kinky too.”
The guy made a yikes-face, and I felt the need to elaborate.
“I check his Instagram sometimes, and if he posts four pictures every month, one is from this place,” I explained. “Usually with a caption like ‘Luke is teaching me to post foodporn, whatever that is’ and ‘Macklin’s eggs Benedict are a bit of a religious experience.’”
I could tell I’d mentioned names the guy recognized. I was right. This was the munch of KC’s kink community. Motherfucker. I’d seen eight pictures from this place on KC’s dusty Instagram—or parts of the place. Mostly from the rooftop terrace. Maybe that was where they hosted the munch.
“You know them, don’t you?” I pressed.
The guy smiled uncertainly and shrugged slightly. “We take integrity seriously, but…”
Yeah.
“Who’s your mother’s ex-husband?”
“KC Hayles.”
He nodded once. He’d heard that name too. Then he eyed someone else, or two someones, coming up the sidewalk. They were twins. Hot-as-shit set of twins in their forties.
One of them smirked upon seeing the guy I’d been talking to. “You hidin’, Cameron?”
I observed the guy’s reaction. Cameron. A crooked grin full of mischief lit up his face. He was really fucking cute, and I didn’t usually feel attraction toward men my age. He was a bit taller than me but not much. Blue eyes.
“Does that sound like something I would do, Sir?” Cameron countered.
Definitely a submissive.
One of the twins chuckled and ruffled Cameron’s shaggy, dirty-blond hair. “See you upstairs, boy.” He spared me the quickest of glances, lifted his brow a little, maybe in curiosity, before he and his brother took the steps up to the restaurant.
Cameron turned back to me. “It’s possible you’ve stumbled upon your stepdad’s community.”
I figured. “I’ll just reschedule with the guy I was gonna meet. Thanks for letting me know.”
It wasn’t too important I met him today anyway. It was only a bite to eat to see if I was compatible to play with him and his boyfriend.
Cameron cleared his throat. “Hey, wait. If you know KC… Does that mean you know Lucian too?”
That would be a stretch. “I’ve met him a few times, sure. I wouldn’t say I know him, though.” I’d had my suspicions about Lucian—that he was kinky too. It wasn’t a surprise whatsoever to have it confirmed. He was big-time Master material. “Why? Are you together or something?”
Cameron snorted. “I wish. No, he’s with some dude who’s manipulating him like fucking whoa, and Lucian won’t see it.”
I frowned. That didn’t compute with my impression of Lucian.
“Anyway,” Cameron went on. “Here’s a crazy idea. You wanna get out of here and grab a burger or something? Your plan fell through, and I can think of better things to do than watch Lucian and his little troll.”
I stood straighter instantly. This guy wanted to hang out? Fuck yes! I could use a new friend.
“Absolutely,” I said, sticking out my hand. “I’m Noa.”
Cameron smiled, visibly relieved. “Cameron.”

About Cara

I’m often awkwardly silent or, if the topic interests me, a chronic rambler. In other words, I can discuss writing forever and ever. Fiction, in particular. The love story—while a huge draw and constantly present—is secondary for me, because there’s so much more to writing romance fiction than just making two (or more) people fall in love and have hot sex.
There’s a world to build, characters to develop, interests to create, and a topic or two to research thoroughly.
Every book is a challenge for me, an opportunity to learn something new, and a puzzle to piece together. I want my characters to come to life, and the only way I know to do that is to give them substance—passions, history, goals, quirks, and strong opinions—and to let them evolve.
I want my men and women to be relatable. That means allowing room for everyday problems and, for lack of a better word, flaws. My characters will never be perfect.
Wait…this was supposed to be about me, not my writing.
I’m a writey person who loves to write. Always wanderlusting, twitterpating, kinking, cooking, baking, and geeking. There’s time for hockey and family, too. But mostly, I just love to write.

ARC: A New Enemy – Cara Dee Book Review + Excerpt

A New Enemy by Cara Dee
Series: Enemies Book #1
Genre: Gay Contemporary Romance
Tropes: Lovers to enemies/Enemies to lovers, Found family, Opposites attract,
Best friend’s brother

Available in Kindle Unlimited: https://readerlinks.com/l/1992930

Synopsis

Family | Book 1 of 2 | Lovers to Enemies | Enemies to…

The rivalry runs strong and fuels the burning chemistry between Sebastian and Blake in this late-summer romance where they have two options. Quick and hard or not at all.
He put me on edge before he even cruised into town with his cowboy hat, devil- may care grin, and Southern drawl. Partly because I couldn’t help viewing him as a threat. He was my best friend’s brother—and maybe more importantly, the uncle of Teddy, a special kid who’d been the light of my life for years.
Teddy couldn’t be more excited about his uncle visiting. Me…not so much. No matter how intensely the chemistry sizzled between us when we met, no matter how much my chest seized up at the sight of him, no matter how easily he drew me in.
He could return to his closet in Georgia for all I cared, preferably before I lost my ever loving mind and had to wage war against the man who somehow got under my skin.
This story takes place in Cara Dee’s Camassia Cove Universe, a fictional town where all books stand on their own, unless otherwise stated, and the reader can jump in wherever they want.

Review

I’m a big fan of Cara Dee’s m/m romance and jumped at the chance to review A New Enemy.

I was really excited to dive into this book, the blurb and the titles promised some sizzling angst, lots of tension and a gripping story. I was hoping for a good dose of steam and some tender moments thrown, which I’ve loved so much from her other stories but this one didn’t quite work out as well for me.

A New Enemy was ok but felt like it only just scratched the surface of what it could have been.

I’ll admit I was a little disappointed with the way this book played out. I was expecting so much more from it because of the allusion to the enemies-to-lovers trope but really, there was no heat or angst to substantiate that. It kind of just fell flat. I did really like the characters and thought they were all very interesting individually, particularly our two leads, but there needed to be more to actually make them well-developed characters o whom I could connect and the same thing applies when it comes to making their romance stand out more. As I said, it was all kind of flat. I really wish there would have been more showing and less telling as that could have made things more engaging. A finally, just a personal preference, but I think I’d have really liked to see dual POVs but I’m hopeful for the next book in this duet because there was a nice cliffhanger.

Quick, sweet and with a little steam, A New Enemy was an ok start to this new duet.

Overall, I was hoping for more with this book but because I liked the characters and have hope that the second book can fill in the gaps this one left in this duet, it wasn’t a total loss. It was a good introduction to the duet but there is surely more to come in order to get it right. I am giving A New Enemy 3.75 stars because it was a fine read just not as developed as I’d have liked. I would recommend A New Enemy to fans of m/m romance.

Excerpt

As I reached the front door, I peered through the round window and spotted Teddy with his uncle next to my four-wheeler. Teddy was sitting in the driveway, right next to the wooden fence I shared with Bob, and he was picking flowers from the strip of greenery the fence stood on.

Blake was squatting down beside him, with his back to me, and he had on an actual cowboy hat. Christ. So that was a thing. Jeans, white tee, black cowboy hat.
He’d brought Georgia with him.
I scratched my chest absently, hesitating, then thought, fuck it. I opened the door carefully, just a few inches. Sue me, I was curious.
“You ready to go in?” Blake asked. “I’m sure your mama needs us to tell her to sit down and rest.”
Oh, his accent was way more pronounced than Sophia’s. His voice was something else entirely too. Low and rich, and with that Southern drawl.
“My sister kicks a lot,” Teddy said and picked another flower. He sounded tired.
“Dylan and I kiss her belly and say ‘Be nice to Momma.’”
I smiled faintly and stepped out on the front step.
“Does your sister listen?” Blake asked.
Teddy laughed and shook his head. “Nooo. She kicks when she wants.”
Blake let out a chuckle. “Typical sisters.” He reached out and gave Teddy’s
shoulder a squeeze. “Let’s head inside, champ. You were gonna introduce me to your little friend too.”
Little?
That had to be Lily or one of the dogs, because I didn’t think 6’5” and 210 pounds was considered little.
“Uncle Blake, you hold these for Momma?” Teddy extended the flowers he’d picked.
Blake stood up and held out a hand. “Of course. You need any help gettin’ up?”
No, he didn’t.
“No,” Teddy grunted.
I revealed myself fully, preferring to let Georgia boy think I’d listened in without qualms rather than eavesdropping like some sneak.
Blake must’ve seen me in his periphery. He did a slight double take before facing me, and fuck me, the man was ten times more gorgeous in real life. Rugged as hell, soulful brown eyes, a couple days’ worth of scruff.

He furrowed his brow a little and touched the brim of his hat, and he dipped it a tiny bit, like they did in old movies. “Hello.”
I smiled. Soph had neglected to tell me how fuckable her brother looked. And sounded.
“Bastian, I see you!” Teddy exclaimed with a tired grin. He jogged over to me and hugged my middle.
“I see you too, buddy.” I squeezed him tightly and noticed Blake approaching. So I stuck o out my hand. “I’m Sebastian, Teddy’s little friend.”

Review

Ah, Truth or Dare was absolutely fabulous!

I love these characters so much and Brooke and Ella just made me love them even more with this last installment in their series. Bash and Kieran are a new favourite couple of mine and I’m sad that their books are all wrapped up now. But damn, what a ride it’s been!

Everything leading up to this moment made it so special!

I’ve been rooting for Bash to find the love of his life for what feels like ages and the fact that he found that with Kieran is amazing. Both of these guys are truly wonderful men and their romance has been a beautiful thing to witness. From friends to lovers, these guys have grown a lot throughout these three books and I was over the moon happy to see them get their happily ever after. These guys had such a profound connection, and chemistry beyond compare and it was clear as day what with how sexy they were. I wish I could read them endlessly…

Sexy, sweet and entirely too addictive, I loved every second of Truth or Dare!

Overall, Brooke and Ella did a lovely job at concluding their story in a great way and while I loved every last thing about Truth or Dare, as always, it’s bittersweet. Nevertheless, I can’t recommend this series enough because it’s just so addictive and sexy. I am giving Truth or Dare 5 stars and would recommend it to fans of m/m romance.

Blurb

I can’t have Elijah Iverson.

I can’t have him because he’s my older brother’s best friend. I can’t have him because I broke his heart five years ago; because he’s now engaged to someone else—someone kind and dependable who deserves his whiskey eyes, his soft mouth, his fierce intellect.

I can’t have Elijah because I’ve chosen God instead.

The Bell brothers, though . . . well, we don’t exactly have the greatest track record with vows. But I’m determined to do this monk thing right—to pledge myself to a cloistered life and spend the rest of my years in chastity and prayer. But now Elijah’s here. He’s here and he’s coming with me on my European monastery road trip, and between the whispered confessions and the stolen kisses and the moments bent over an ancient altar, my vows are feeling flimsier by the day.

And vows or not, I know in my heart that it would take more than a good and holy monk to resist Elijah Iverson right now. It would take a saint.

And we all know that I’m no saint.

Saint AN 1

Review

As always, I’m left shell-shocked by Sierra Simone’s unmatched talent and prose.

I don’t quite know where to begin other than that this book was phenomenal. Every time I read a Sierra Simone book, I come away fundamentally changed, like I can’t go back to who I was before reading the book and that I’ll be forever changed going forward. I’m not sure how to really describe that feeling but I will say that it’s a feeling I’ve only felt for one author’s work and that is Sierra Simone. I guess it’s something akin to awe and inspiration so I’ll say this, you must read this book, it is everything and more!

Saint took me by surprise in so many ways and I loved it for that.

I went into this book with tons of excitement. It had been a while since I last read a Sierra Simone book and I was eager to dive in and experience the rush of emotions that was sure to come. What I got was beyond the scope of what I could have expected and it shook me, crushed me and put me back together again.

There is a really tragic and heartbreaking quality and tone to this book. It is ever-present and incredibly powerful. It hangs over moments of happiness, sexy times and anything in between. It was like a cloud just hovering over everything and maybe that’s symbolic but it certainly evoked something in me.

The writing in Saint was incredible. It was truly flawless, seamless perfection with addictive prose and a beautiful, gut-wrenching plot. It’s the kind of writing that builds a story that sucks you in and one that you don’t want to escape. The range of emotions it made me feel was crazy. I was completely and wholeheartedly invested in the story.

The characters as well were phenomenal. I don’t think I’ve ever related to so much with a male character before but man did I ever with Aiden. I could identify with so much of his experience and journey and I loved him instantly. He carved a place into my heart and his special story won’t ever leave me.

Saint RElease Teaser

Aiden was the epitome of grace, kindness patience and self-awareness. Those things came with time but it’s clear that he embodies those tried wholly. Aiden is the kind of character who inspires with his struggles and triumphs and despite the horrible sadness and heartbreak of his experiences, it was wonderful and uplifting to see the light within him, the fun and charming, happy personality that shone through every so often. He really was an amazing character.

Elijah too was amazing in his own right. His patience, unwavering support and unconditional love were wonderful to see. He was a man with so much dedication, selflessness and heart. Seeing how gentle he was with Aiden and how he cared for him was beautiful. Honestly, their entire relationship was beautiful even when it was heart-rending.

Aiden and Elijah had an immovable connection. It was clear that they were soulmates because, despite hard times, they kept gravitating right back to each other. There was no keeping that chemistry apart, it was just undeniable. Aiden and Elijah had such intense passion and of course a perfectly steamy romance. Sierra Simone did an excellent job weaving the romance into the wider story arc and it was developed extremely well, as were the characters individually. As a whole, the romance was amazing and incredibly satisfying.

I don’t want to ramble on too much about how phenomenal this book was because I could go on for days and probably not even succeed at expressing just how great it truly is so I’ll leave it at that. My only critic is very much a personal thing so take it with a grain of salt. I respect the author’s decision to have Aiden be the main character and the subject of the book because well, it absolutely makes sense given the storyline but in doing that, I feel like I didn’t really get to know Elijah. I got to know Aiden extensively because the book was largely written in his POV but save for a few chapters to glean Elijah’s thoughts, there weren’t a lot of opportunities to really get to know him as deeply as I might have liked to. In the end, that didn’t really bother me too much because I got to know him through Aiden’s eyes to some extent and the book was just so well done that a minor thing like this didn’t really hold any clout.

With impeccable prose and featuring a beautiful, yet heartbreaking love story, Saint is an emotional journey of tragedy, passion, love and so much more.

Overall, everything about this book was amazing and I loved it like everything! Saint just reinforced why I love this author so much and why she is unmatched in my mind and my heart. I am giving Saint 5 incredible stars and would recommend it to everyone but especially fans of m/m romance with forbidden and second-chances romance tropes.

Dare Me, the scorching hot second book in the Dare to Try Trilogy from
USA Today bestselling authors Ella Frank and Brooke Blaine is now live!

Blurb

Dare Me is part two of the Dare to Try trilogy and should only be read after Dare You.

The moment Bash “Miss Razzle Dazzle” Vogel sashayed into Lieutenant Kieran Bailey’s life, both their worlds were turned upside down.

What started as an easy friendship quickly morphed into sizzling chemistry that neither one could deny.

But what Kieran knows better than anyone is that when a fire burns this hot and heavy, someone’s bound to get burned.

Do they dare to risk being together? Or will the flame of this hot match consume them both?

Dare Me - AN

Review

I love this couple so much, it’s crazy… Book number 28 by this duo combined is officially in the bag!

I fell in love with Bash and Kieran’s fiery chemistry in book 1 and this time around, things went to a whole other level. Brooke and Ella did a wonderful job of continuing Bash and Kieran’s incredible romance and I loved every second of Dare Me.

My only qualm was that the book was so short…

I wish this book would have been longer cause I was just so invested in it. When I realized it was nearly over, I had to physically force myself not to procrastinate and just finish it because I really didn’t want it to stop where it did. Dare Me picks up where Dare You ends and has Bash and Kieran navigating the challenges of their new romance. Communication and commitment are two important things in their relationship and we see them take centre stage in the development of their romance. I really loved seeing them take a step forward in their relationship and admit to the fact that there was something special in their connection to one another.

Of course, in true Brooke and Ella fashion, things were very steamy which I loved. There was a nice blend of sexy and sweet and honestly, these guys have just stolen my heart with their cute and flirty banter. Oh man, the mouth on Bash… he is unfiltered and unapologetic and we love him for it. As for Kieran, he can give as good as he gets which makes him the perfect man to face off with Bash and handle his particular kind of charm.

Quick, sexy and full of sweet banter, Dare Me was a lovely continuation to this addictive series.

Overall, I had a really fun time reading Dare Me and getting to see some familiar South Haven faces. Dare Me has only made me that much more excited to read Truth or Dare to see how this phenomenal author duo conclude Bash and Kieran’s wonderful love story. I am giving Dare Me 5 stars and would recommend it to fans of M/M romance.

ARC – Lessons in Sin – Pam Godwin Book Review

Lessons in Sin by Pam Godwin is now live!

Lessons In Sin AN - IG

Blurb

There’s no absolution for the things I’ve done.
But I found a way to control my impulses.
I became a priest.

As Father Magnus Falke, I suppress my cravings. As the headteacher of a Catholic boarding school, I’m never tempted by a student.

Until Tinsley Constantine.

The bratty princess challenges my rules and awakens my dark nature. With each punishment I lash upon her, I want more. In my classroom, private rectory, and bent over my altar, I want all of her.

One touch risks everything I stand for. My faith. My redemption. And even my life.

As if that could stop me. I need her pain, and her heart, and she needs my lessons in sin.

Review

This book was completely addictive and frankly one of the best written forbidden romances that I’ve ever read!

Pam Godwin is one of my favourite authors of all time and I’ll blindly and happily read anything and everything she writes. I’ve read several of her novels and know just how addictive and beautifully written they are so when I picked this one up, I knew I was in for something epic that would consume every second of my life. Lessons in Sin did exactly that, from the very first chapter, I was sucked right into this breathtaking story and I didn’t want to put it down. I procrastinated so hard toward the end because I just didn’t want to finish it because wow, this book was something special!

First, I’d like to point out that this book is part of the Midnight Dynasty series which is a multi-author series. I didn’t know about this series before reading Lessons in Sin and so didn’t read any of those books before this one. That in no way affected my reading as all the books standalone but Tinsely’s brothers, I believe, feature in their own books throughout the series. Alright, carry on…

As a fan of forbidden romance, Lessons in Sin ticked all my boxes.

I am a forbidden romance super fan but honestly, Pam Godwin excels at these student/teacher age-gap romances. She has a way with words that is just beyond anything I’ve read before and I’m just utterly captivated by her stories. She creates such heart-wrenching stories with wonderfully developed, complex characters and a romance that just takes your breath away. Pam Godwin’s writing is simply put, poignant, addictive and in a league of its own. Her talent knows no bounds!

Now, the writing and execution of this book were great. I have nothing but positive comments on this front. The pacing was perfect for the story and the plot developed nicely. I guess you could say there was some angst and build up at the beginning of the story which I think worked extremely well for the way things would progress and there really wasn’t a single aspect of the story that felt rushed or dull so as a whole this was a perfectly executed story.

As for the content, it was spot on. I was wholeheartedly invested in Tinsley and Magnus’s relationship. It was full of tension, insane chemistry, unspeakably steamy sexy times and an undeniable romantic connection. Tinsely was a great heroine. She was strong, outgoing, bold and wasn’t afraid of letting herself be vulnerable. She stood up for herself and humbly accepted the care that was offered to her without being bratty or too standoffish. She was mature for her age yet young at heart and definitely the kind of heroine that I gravitate towards. Magnus, oh Magnus, how I loved him. The man was the epitome of tall, dark and handsome, but there was so much more to him than meets the eye. Magnus was intelligent, caring unwavering, protective and possessive. The man knew exactly what he liked and what he wanted and though he had waves of patience, nerves of steel and restraint like no other, I especially loved that once he gave in to his feelings for Tinsely, that he didn’t try to deny it or chalk it up to her teenage fantasies or something equally as petty. He was all in and that devotion was heady and made for an exciting romance.

Speaking of the romance, holy smokes it was hot hot hot. The steam was on a whole other level and that in combination with their undeniable chemistry made things even sexier. Tinsely and Magnus had an immediate connection. It wasn’t necessarily romantic or even sexual, it was just something that was there, a sort of tension that showed that these two people had a spark that was just waiting to be ignited into a flame and boy did it ever burn. Tinsely and Magnus just fit together so well and were truly soulmates, both filling a void in each other’s lives and being exactly what the other needed. They understood each other and supported one another and honestly, what they had was off the charts special, they were so in sync and just beautiful. They had many things that forced them to hide their romance like the obvious “forbidenness” of it all, but there was more at stake than just that. I enjoyed the sneaking around because it made it all the more intense and gripping. There was also a gritty element to their romance and the story also had a bit of a suspenseful or darker undertone. That isn’t to say the story is dark because it isn’t, but the vibes are kind of suspenseful and a bit gloomy. There also some fun moments and other things, it’ll definitely have you feeling an array of emotions.

Sexy, addictive and impeccably written, Lessons in Sin is a beautiful, intense forbidden romance with amazing, complex characters.

Overall, Lessons in Sin was a phenomenal read and I really didn’t want to have to say goodbye to these characters. Everything about this book called to the romance reader inside me and it was exactly the type of story I love to lose myself in. I am giving Lessons in Sin 5 incredible stars and would recommend it to fans of forbidden romance with a student/teacher trope.

“Nothing is going to prevent me from being with you in the way I’ve only ever been in my dreams.”

ARC: Sound of Madness – Maria Luis Book Review (Broken Crown Trilogy #2)

Blurb

He is my ruin.
My complete and utter devastation.
Loyalty or death.
I make my choice in a palace of flames, and awake to total darkness . . .
And at his mercy.
Calloused hands bring hell to my door and his velvet voice spews only poison.
“A traitor to the queen,” he calls me, and though I don’t know his name, it’s clear that he’s no Prince Charming.
Monster.
Villain.
A man who demands that I take it all—and submit.
But no one would ever mistake me for a damsel in distress.
He wants me on my knees, but it won’t be me who breaks.
Only, falling for the most hated man in England was not the plan.
If war is hell, then love is carnage, and the blood that’s spilled will belong to us both.

Review

I was really looking forward to Damien’s story and Sound of Madness was definitely a wild and fun ride!

In the past, I’ve really enjoyed Maria Luis’ writing because of its richness and her ability to really deliver when it comes to world-building. That said, I liked this book, but not as much as the first. After Road to Fire, I was very much intrigued by Damien and was eager to learn more about him, his story, and to see him find love. Suffice to say, I did feel like I got to know him well and I was very happy for him and Rowena. However, where I took a small issue was with the actual writing itself, but I’ll get to that later.

Sound of Madness is very well-developed and, all things considered, has a strong storyline. Everything does take place in the span of three weeks which is a little quick, but because of how long the book is and how much time and detail Maria Luis puts into her stories, the progression in plot and romance felt natural.

Damien and Rowena made a great couple. They were so similar but yet very different and they complimented each other, as a result. Damien and Rowena definitely had some insta-lust/insta-attraction dare I say, a case of insta-love but as I said, because of the way the story is structured, their love seemed believable. They started more as enemies but quickly realized they understood one another in a way no one else could and they bonded because of this. Seeing these two lonely people find a partner in each other was really sweet and their romance was definitely epic, with lots of chemistry, connection, love, understanding, and a good dose of steam though it wasn’t all that frequent. That isn’t a bad thing, this book is very plot-driven so the steam was included in appropriate measures and I really appreciated it.

As for the events that took place, there was lots of drama, some suspense, and of course, lots of mystery. I liked how Damien and Rowena’s story was sort of tied up but there are certainly still questions that I’m hoping get answered in the final book. That being said, I’m also really excited about Guy’s book. He’s the Priest brother that seems the most elusive and misunderstood and I really don’t feel like I know much about him so I’m excited for his moment in the sun.

Now for that issue I mentioned, I have to admit, while I was invested in the story and didn’t want to put it down, there were times when things were a bit tedious because the writing got bogged down by purple prose. It wasn’t horrible, I’ve definitely read worse, but still, the writing was dense, and sometimes I felt myself pull away a bit because it got so wordy. In the end, this didn’t hugely affect my enjoyment of the book but it was something I picked up on throughout the book.

Chock full of drama, suspense, and mystery, Sound of Madness is an action-packed enemies-to-lovers romance between two strong characters!

Overall, I enjoyed Sound of Madness and look forward to reading the next book in the series. Damien and Rowena were lots of fun and I was so happy for them and their happy for now ending. I’ll be looking for more closure on that front in the next book along with Guy’s story. I am giving Sound of Madness 4.5 stars and recommend it to fans of enemies-to-lovers romance!

REVIEW

Holy freaking freak, Destroyed Destiny was out of this world amazing!

Woot, woot, I’m tapping myself on the back for having made it through this whirlwind series because damn what a ride it was. I cried I laughed, I was pissed as hell at times and then happy as can be at others. I felt an array of emotions, swooned like a loon over the steamy bits, and fell head over heels for Story and Grayson. I cannot wrap my head around the fact that their story is over but if there is one thing I know, it is that their story was one that will stick with me for a long time to come.

Now, I ask you to bear with me as I ramble on and gush over my love for this book but honestly, Mary deserves to know what a phenomenal thing she’s done with this series so here goes!

First off, I’d like to note that I have read many books in my lifetime both in my personal life as a serial reader and in my academic life. Over the last four years since I began reviewing romance, I’ve read an average of 100 books per year and as an academic reader, I’ve read some of the most popular classics out there. I’d like to think I’m generally well versed in what makes a book outstanding, engaging, and legendary and I can without a single doubt or hesitation say that of all the authors from whom I’ve read, Mary Catherine Gebhard demarcates herself as one of the most talented authors of them all. Whatsmore, among a boatload of romance and classic novels, Destroyed Destiny and the previous two books in Story and Grayson’s trilogy are three of the most exquisitely written and addictive books I’ve ever laid eyes on or had the absolute pleasure of reading. Honestly, this is why I read! I read to be transported, to be consumed and moved by a world, a story, and characters. Mary’s writing is unparalleled in that it delivers on these things and then some. Her stories are epic, awe-inspiring, and completely addictive, her books are monumental, unique and so fantastically written, I feel like the story and the characters are real, that I can hop on a plane to Crowne Point, drive to the Crowne mansion and meet these people who have consumed my world since I first met them.

Really, I’m sort of speechless, I knew I was going to love these books when I finished Heartless Hero what feels like ages ago because Grayson was such an intriguing character but I didn’t know what to expect, certainly I was expecting to be as moved by these books as I have been but I wouldn’t have wanted it any other way. Mary crafts deeply intricate worlds and doesn’t skimp on detail. She is a literary unicorn who literally thinks of everything and is so intelligent in her writing, her talent shines through so brightly. To bring a story as complex and detailed as this to life and deliver it in such an elegant way is indicative of her talent.

Destroyed Destiny Teaser

All right, so about them books...

Over the course of three novels, I’ve gotten to know these two unique, complex, and flawed individuals and have seen them grow in the midst of heartache, happiness, love, tragedy, and opposition. Grayson and Story are some of the most well-developed characters I’ve ever read and I genuinely feel like I know them on a personal level. Their individual arcs were so well thought out and paced. I felt like their journey from start to finish was so authentic and I loved seeing them grow into the people they ended up becoming. Grayson and Story from Stolen Soulmate are not Grayson and Story from Destroyed Destiny, they are so much more because of everything that has been thrown at them. Grayson is still the alphahole we know and love but his priorities have become clear and he is willing to go to war for them and Story is the same compassionate girl we fell in love with but she has grown into a strong woman who’s ready to fight for herself and love.

Likewise, their relationship has developed into something truly beautiful and unbreakable. Their chemistry is as intense as ever and the angst, oh man, the angst is so hot. The connection they share goes above and beyond anything I could’ve ever imagined and the bond they share is so unique, so theirs. Grayson and Story, in addition to the emotional side of their romance, are incredibly sexy together, like their romance is full of ridiculously steamy moments and I was obsessed. Seeing them navigate the situation they’ve ended up in after the events in Forbidden Fate was a real whirlwind, very emotional and suspenseful but also so much fun as that characteristic MCG humor is definitely present among all the drama.

Annnnnd, on another note she did the unthinkable, Mary made me like Lottie and West, gasp! I genuinely grew to like them and I’m actually really happy I got to see them differently.

Ok, let’s wrap this up!

Now that I’ve sung Mary’s praises and proclaimed my love for this book (and series) I do want to point out that I’ve purposely held back in the level of detail of my review. If you are familiar with my reviews, I tend to go into a good amount of detail about content and writing and while I did extensively discuss the writing side, I’m not going to go further into the content because it is the third book in a trilogy and I really really really don’t want to spoil even the tiniest detail because this series deserves to be experienced with all its jaw-dropping moments.

Destroyed Destiny is an epic masterpiece with stunning prose, magnificent characters, and a thrilling storyline!

Overall, Destroyed Destiny was truly sensational and will go down as one of the best books I’ve read in my entire life! One of the best written, best developed, with the best characters, the best blazing hot sexy times, and the best everything. Before I digress again, I’ll say this, you need to read this book, it’s an absolute must-read! I am giving it 5 gigantic stars and would recommend it to fans of forbidden romance and bully romance!

ARC: Shallow River – H.D. Carlton Book Review

Reading Shallow River was my first experience reading anything by H.D. Carlton. As a fan of dark romance, the blurb immediately caught my eye and I really couldn’t wait to dive in!

Personally, things started really strong in Shallow River. I loved that it took me out of my comfort zone and really immersed me in the dark side of this dark romance and I found it very engaging. I wouldn’t go as far as to say I was addicted to it and couldn’t put it down, but I was definitely invested and wanted to know more, particularly when it came to the dynamics between the characters and how those would pan out. My interest in the storyline stayed the same pretty much the entire time and I did enjoy the characters, though I did have the occasional issue with their attitudes/behaviours in certain circumstances. However, where my enjoyment was knocked down a few pegs was where the writing was concerned. There was a certain unruliness to the pace, things felt rushed sometimes while at other times things felt unfinished or underdeveloped, repetition also became somewhat of an issue. This just left things feeling off-balance and didn’t allow for me to really appreciate the story as much as I could have.

In the end, I am giving Shallow River 4 stars because it is a pretty great dark romance, just one with a few slight hiccups. Nonetheless, I would recommend it to fans of nitty-gritty dark romance (emphasis on the dark) that love to be on the receiving end of a hefty emotional punch!

ARC: Headlines – Ella Frank Book Review (Prime Time #3)

Headlines - BT banner

Headlines, the epic and must read conclusion of the Prime Time Series
from USA Today bestselling author Ella Frank is available now!

Blurb

Xander

If I had to describe Sean Bailey, it would be as the sexy, caring, wonderful man I’ve gone and fallen in love with. I never could’ve imagined a world where he was my everything. But with each passing day, the connection between us grows stronger, and the idea of a world without him is something I can’t imagine.

But Sean’s love doesn’t come without complications. As the older brother of my lifelong best friend, this new love has caused relationships to break down and communication to become stilted, and the one question that remains is: am I willing to give up the love and friendship of one for the chance of love and forever with another?

Sean

I didn’t mean to fall in love with Alexander Thorne, my brother’s ex and the number one prime-time news anchor in the country. I mean, no one could’ve seen that coming—least of all me. But that’s exactly what happened over these past couple of months: I fell in love.

That’d be complicated enough, I suppose, but Xander? Well, he fell in love with me too, and while it’s caused some major upset in the dynamics around here, I have to believe that a love this real can only lead to somewhere amazing.

This thing between us started out as a job, a friend helping out a friend. But after playing the role of Xander’s boyfriend, I find myself wanting the job full-time, because neither of us are playing anymore.

Headlines - AN

Review

Oh man, how I’ve missed these two!

I adore Sean and Xander and have been eagerly awaiting the bittersweet conclusion to their beautiful love story. I fell for them hard in Inside Affair and have continued to fall ever more in love with them with every book. I wish there was more for them, but with the way Headlines wrapped up, I can’t say I’m not grinning ear to ear with happiness and satisfaction.

Ella Frank did it again with this hit series!

I’ve repeated this time and again, but Ella Frank truly is my unicorn author. I’ll read anything she writes and will love, hands down. This story she’s crafted here with Xander and Sean is one that is passionate, romantic, sexy, and fun. The characters are brilliant, engaging and so damn easy to love.

Sean and Xander have grown so much since the first book on account of being with each other and we really do see how they’ve changed. This development is great because it really did show how much of an impact each of them had on each other. I was so happy that they found their perfect match in one another because their chemistry really was something else. It was instantaneous, combustible, and undeniable. In Headlines, we see a different side, one that is more focused on the depths of their relationship while still including all the steamy goodness we love. I enjoyed getting to see different facets of their romance and really couldn’t get enough.

Aside from this, I did have one tiny critique which is that I wish more would have happened in this book. Inside Affair and Breaking News had a good dose of intrigue in them but in Headlines, not a whole lot happened and what did happen took place in a relatively short period of time. This isn’t something that affected my overall enjoyment because I was just so hooked that nothing could interfere, but it is something that caught my eye and gave me pause for a second. I understand the focus on this book was on something particular but still, I thought this was something worth pointing out.

Beautiful, heartwarming, sexy, and fun, Headlines was an amazing conclusion to an epic trilogy!

Overall, I have loved living this experience with Xander and Sean and am so over the moon happy for them. It was nice seeing and hearing about my OG Ella Frank men and I can’t wait to see what she brings us next. I am giving Headlines 5 stars and will recommend it to fans of m/m romance.

“Sean had found his way into my heart and become the most important part of it. He had this way about him that called to me, that calmed me, and while we knew that people thought we were mad, to us, it didn’t matter.”
