Dare Me - AN

Review

I love this couple so much, it’s crazy… Book number 28 by this duo combined is officially in the bag!

I fell in love with Bash and Kieran’s fiery chemistry in book 1 and this time around, things went to a whole other level. Brooke and Ella did a wonderful job of continuing Bash and Kieran’s incredible romance and I loved every second of Dare Me.

My only qualm was that the book was so short…

I wish this book would have been longer cause I was just so invested in it. When I realized it was nearly over, I had to physically force myself not to procrastinate and just finish it because I really didn’t want it to stop where it did. Dare Me picks up where Dare You ends and has Bash and Kieran navigating the challenges of their new romance. Communication and commitment are two important things in their relationship and we see them take centre stage in the development of their romance. I really loved seeing them take a step forward in their relationship and admit to the fact that there was something special in their connection to one another.

Of course, in true Brooke and Ella fashion, things were very steamy which I loved. There was a nice blend of sexy and sweet and honestly, these guys have just stolen my heart with their cute and flirty banter. Oh man, the mouth on Bash… he is unfiltered and unapologetic and we love him for it. As for Kieran, he can give as good as he gets which makes him the perfect man to face off with Bash and handle his particular kind of charm.

Quick, sexy and full of sweet banter, Dare Me was a lovely continuation to this addictive series.

Overall, I had a really fun time reading Dare Me and getting to see some familiar South Haven faces. Dare Me has only made me that much more excited to read Truth or Dare to see how this phenomenal author duo conclude Bash and Kieran’s wonderful love story. I am giving Dare Me 5 stars and would recommend it to fans of M/M romance.

Dare You - AN

Review

Oh, how I would have given anything for this book not to end when it did!

I am a huge fan of Ella Frank and Brooke Blaine and would go as far as to say they are my favorite authors of all time. I say this because I have read more of their books than any other author ever and I have loved every single one. Dare You marks the 27th book I’ve read from this duo combined and it was nothing short of spectacular. I was hooked from the very first page and was hanging off every word until that very last page. I honestly could have read Bash and Kieran’s story for ages without tiring, it was just that addictive.

I flew through Dare You faster than I have any other book by Ella and Brooke…

Which is saying a lot based on how many I’ve read and how much I adore their writing. There was just something about Bash and Kieran that was utterly irresistible. I, like many other South Haven fans, have been waiting with excitement for Bash’s love story. Now that it’s finally come, I can confirm, it was most definitely worth the wait by a long shot.

Ella and Brooke did a wonderful job of bringing these characters to life and exploring their budding relationship. The pacing was perfect for their dynamic and the angst and tension was wonderful and sexy to boot. On the writing front, I wouldn’t have changed anything because it was a perfect introduction to this new trilogy and did have a good level of development for the first book in the series.

As for the characters, they were amazing, of course.

Sebastian Vogel is a fabulous and illustrious man with confidence in spades. He isn’t afraid to flirt with anyone and everyone and he’s quick to speak his mind. In short, Bash is impossible not to love. He’s charismatic, kind, sassy and just a whole lot of fun. His energy is contagious and he just puts a smile on my face with his unfiltered banter.

Kieran Bailey has a heart of gold, dedicating his life to saving others and also firmly standing up for what he believes in. Kieran was an amazing man, he didn’t shy away from Bash’s advances, instead he welcomed them and bantered right back. He was easy to love what with his unwavering supportive and caring personality.

I knew Bash from A Little Bit Like Love, the first book in the South Haven series by Brooke Blaine but I haven’t read A Little Bit Like Desire yet and that was fine, so don’t worry about having to read anything before this series. I knew Kieran from the previous Bailey brother’s books, the last two books in Ella Frank’s Confession series (Henri and Bailey) and her Prime Time series (Inside Affair, Breaking News and Headlines).

Despite having met these characters before, it was only briefly. I didn’t feel like I truly knew very much about Bash and in Dare You we just begin to scratch the surface of who he is. I was happy to finally get to know him but I’m even more excited to continue this series to discover more about who this glamorous man really is. As for Kieran, he was kind of a mystery. Kieran was very much a sidelined character in the other Bailey Brother’s books so I didn’t have any real indication as to who he was beyond being Bailey and Sean’s firefighter brother. In Dare You, I finally got to know Kieran and discover what kind of a man he is, what his personality is like and I honestly fell in love with what we got.

These two guys had so much chemistry and it was clear early on that there was a connection developing between them. Bash and Kieran matched each other’s witt and had a very playful relationship. What started out as a platonic relationship turned into a fiery hot romance and it was epic. There was a whole lot of denying their feelings or fighting them but once they gave in, it was one steamy ride.

Like I said, this book only scratched the surface and I really can’t wait to see where things go. With the way things ended, I’m looking forward to seeing how they approach this next step in their relationship because I have no doubt it’ll amazing!

Sexy, angsty and full of flirtatious banter, Dare You was a fantastic start to what will surely be another incredible series by this super talented author duo!

Overall, I loved everything about this book and hated to have had to finish it. I’ll be waiting patiently for the next one because it’ll surely be worth the short wait. I am giving Dare You 5 stars and would recommend it to fans of m/m romance!

P.S. I love getting to visit other characters from previous books so seeing lots of couples show up in this book was a lovely little treat that had me smiling from ear to ear.

ARC – Lessons in Sin – Pam Godwin Book Review

Lessons in Sin by Pam Godwin is now live!

Lessons In Sin AN - IG

Blurb

There’s no absolution for the things I’ve done.
But I found a way to control my impulses.
I became a priest.

As Father Magnus Falke, I suppress my cravings. As the headteacher of a Catholic boarding school, I’m never tempted by a student.

Until Tinsley Constantine.

The bratty princess challenges my rules and awakens my dark nature. With each punishment I lash upon her, I want more. In my classroom, private rectory, and bent over my altar, I want all of her.

One touch risks everything I stand for. My faith. My redemption. And even my life.

As if that could stop me. I need her pain, and her heart, and she needs my lessons in sin.

Review

This book was completely addictive and frankly one of the best written forbidden romances that I’ve ever read!

Pam Godwin is one of my favourite authors of all time and I’ll blindly and happily read anything and everything she writes. I’ve read several of her novels and know just how addictive and beautifully written they are so when I picked this one up, I knew I was in for something epic that would consume every second of my life. Lessons in Sin did exactly that, from the very first chapter, I was sucked right into this breathtaking story and I didn’t want to put it down. I procrastinated so hard toward the end because I just didn’t want to finish it because wow, this book was something special!

First, I’d like to point out that this book is part of the Midnight Dynasty series which is a multi-author series. I didn’t know about this series before reading Lessons in Sin and so didn’t read any of those books before this one. That in no way affected my reading as all the books standalone but Tinsely’s brothers, I believe, feature in their own books throughout the series. Alright, carry on…

As a fan of forbidden romance, Lessons in Sin ticked all my boxes.

I am a forbidden romance super fan but honestly, Pam Godwin excels at these student/teacher age-gap romances. She has a way with words that is just beyond anything I’ve read before and I’m just utterly captivated by her stories. She creates such heart-wrenching stories with wonderfully developed, complex characters and a romance that just takes your breath away. Pam Godwin’s writing is simply put, poignant, addictive and in a league of its own. Her talent knows no bounds!

Now, the writing and execution of this book were great. I have nothing but positive comments on this front. The pacing was perfect for the story and the plot developed nicely. I guess you could say there was some angst and build up at the beginning of the story which I think worked extremely well for the way things would progress and there really wasn’t a single aspect of the story that felt rushed or dull so as a whole this was a perfectly executed story.

As for the content, it was spot on. I was wholeheartedly invested in Tinsley and Magnus’s relationship. It was full of tension, insane chemistry, unspeakably steamy sexy times and an undeniable romantic connection. Tinsely was a great heroine. She was strong, outgoing, bold and wasn’t afraid of letting herself be vulnerable. She stood up for herself and humbly accepted the care that was offered to her without being bratty or too standoffish. She was mature for her age yet young at heart and definitely the kind of heroine that I gravitate towards. Magnus, oh Magnus, how I loved him. The man was the epitome of tall, dark and handsome, but there was so much more to him than meets the eye. Magnus was intelligent, caring unwavering, protective and possessive. The man knew exactly what he liked and what he wanted and though he had waves of patience, nerves of steel and restraint like no other, I especially loved that once he gave in to his feelings for Tinsely, that he didn’t try to deny it or chalk it up to her teenage fantasies or something equally as petty. He was all in and that devotion was heady and made for an exciting romance.

Speaking of the romance, holy smokes it was hot hot hot. The steam was on a whole other level and that in combination with their undeniable chemistry made things even sexier. Tinsely and Magnus had an immediate connection. It wasn’t necessarily romantic or even sexual, it was just something that was there, a sort of tension that showed that these two people had a spark that was just waiting to be ignited into a flame and boy did it ever burn. Tinsely and Magnus just fit together so well and were truly soulmates, both filling a void in each other’s lives and being exactly what the other needed. They understood each other and supported one another and honestly, what they had was off the charts special, they were so in sync and just beautiful. They had many things that forced them to hide their romance like the obvious “forbidenness” of it all, but there was more at stake than just that. I enjoyed the sneaking around because it made it all the more intense and gripping. There was also a gritty element to their romance and the story also had a bit of a suspenseful or darker undertone. That isn’t to say the story is dark because it isn’t, but the vibes are kind of suspenseful and a bit gloomy. There also some fun moments and other things, it’ll definitely have you feeling an array of emotions.

Sexy, addictive and impeccably written, Lessons in Sin is a beautiful, intense forbidden romance with amazing, complex characters.

Overall, Lessons in Sin was a phenomenal read and I really didn’t want to have to say goodbye to these characters. Everything about this book called to the romance reader inside me and it was exactly the type of story I love to lose myself in. I am giving Lessons in Sin 5 incredible stars and would recommend it to fans of forbidden romance with a student/teacher trope.

“Nothing is going to prevent me from being with you in the way I’ve only ever been in my dreams.”

ARC: Good Intentions – Ella Frank Book Review (Intentions #2)

Good Intentions, the all-new, emotional and tempting romance and the conclusion to the Intentions Duet from USA Today bestselling author Ella Frank is available now!

Blurb

Gabriel Romero made me hungry for things I’d never wanted,
and starved of the things I didn’t think I’d ever need.
Until now…
Until him…

I was never the man who believed in love, romance, or happily ever afters. I was married to my work, and happy to be that way. Until one night, not too long ago, when an audacious young man lied his way into my life and showed me what I’d been missing.

Bold and sexy, with a face that could melt through the iciest of exteriors, Gabriel Romero is the one factor I never saw coming. There are so many reasons we shouldn’t work—my age, his, our career goals in life—and yet we are drawn together by a passion for music, and each other, that neither of us can deny.

I’ve always been the one to think things through, to follow my head instead of my heart. But if I don’t open myself to what’s possible, instead of thinking of all the ways this seems impossible, I might miss out on the best thing that has ever happened to me.

So I’m taking a chance, and laying myself at his mercy, opening my heart with nothing but good intentions. Only time will tell if Gabriel Romero decides to let me back in.

Good Intentions is the second book in the Intentions Duet.

Review:

Good Intentions was everything and more than I could have ever wanted or hoped for.

Gabriel and Marcus stole my heart in Bad Intentions and I couldn’t wait to see what would come next for these two. After the way the first book ended, I knew I was in for a whole lot of excitement and this book definitely lived up to my expectations. I adore Ella Frank and this book just made me love her all the more!

Gabriel and Marcus are one of my all-time favorite Ella relationships.

Honestly, Gabriel and Marcus are up there alongside Tate and Logan and Julian, Priest and Robbie. Marcus and Gabriel have such a fun, hot and beautiful relationship. They are both so unapologetically themselves and aren’t afraid to show it. They have insane chemistry and they challenge each other. Seeing them fall in love was so sweet and getting to see their love develop over this book was so amazing. These guys are why I read m/m romance, for the thrills, the excitement, the happiness and the emotion.

I hate to say goodbye to them because I fell so hard and fast for them but their story is beautiful and I don’t doubt that it’ll stay with me for a long time as is the case with every Ella Frank story.

Sexy, sweet and such a joy to read, Good Intentions was a wonderful conclusion to this fun duet.

Overall, I can’t sing this book’s praises enough. It was so addictive and just plain amazing from start to finish. If I was hooked to these guys before, this book only made me fall deeper. I am giving Good Intentions 5 stars and would recommend it to fans of m/m romance.

ARC: A Gorgeous Villain – Saffron A. Kent Book Review (St. Mary’s Rebels #2)

BLURB

Two years ago, Reed Jackson betrayed Calliope Thorne and broke her heart. So she stole his most prized possession – a white mustang – and drove it into the lake for revenge.

Now, Callie is stuck at a reform school while Reed is off at college, living his life without repercussions.

Until he comes back.

With him comes back all the feelings that Callie has been trying to bury: anger and heartbreak.

But most of all, desire. At the sight of his beautiful but lying lips and his gunmetal gray eyes that still taunt and smolder when he looks at her.

Whatever though. It’s not as if Callie is ever going to fall for her ex-boyfriend again. Or let him corner her in a bar one night and touch her, kiss her…

Neither is she going to kiss him back. Or worse, sleep with him.

Because that would make her naïve and foolish.

Oh, and also pregnant.

And there’s no way Callie is ever going to get pregnant at eighteen and with Reed’s baby, no less. The guy she hates.

The guy who taught her all about heartbreak. Who might look like a gorgeous hero but really is the villain of her story.

REVIEW

A Gorgeous Villain was one heck of a chunky book!

If you’re into long books, I’m talking 700+ pages, then this book might be for you. However, if the thought of this makes you cringe then maybe stay away…

I am no stranger to Saffron A. Kent, in fact, The Unrequited and Medicine Man are two of my all time favorite books. I was really hoping to adore this book as much as those ones because the premise was so exciting but, like many others, something didn’t quite work and it fell short in many areas. That isn’t to say it wasn’t a fun read, it was just a little stilted and I wasn’t as consumed by it as I would have liked to have been.

The story started off strong but dropped off after awhile…

In my opinion, the first half of the book was really well done. I enjoyed seeing Callie stand up to Reed and making him work for her. It was refreshing to see her stand her ground and not immediately fall to her knees for Reed especially after how he treated her at the end of the prequel novella. As for Reed, he didn’t surprise me at all. He was pretty much the exact same as he was in the prequel. Their romance was nice in the beginning because of the angst and tension between them. I liked the push and pull, the forbidden aspect of their relationship and the fact that they had to navigate the hate her brother’s held for Reed. However, come the second half of the book with the surprise pregnancy, things started to stagnate. At this point, this is where my issues with the book started to shine through and frankly, I wasn’t able to ignore them or make excuses for them either.

In my review of the prequel, I mentioned an issue with repetition and description that was often unnecessary or filler. I attributed this to the fact that it was a prequel setting up for a full length novel and hoped that this wouldn’t persist throughout AGV but alas, it was very much a pervasive issue. The repetition in words, sentences and general statements/ideas quickly became too much. Then there was the overuse of adjectives to describe Reed as well as her brothers and their overprotectiveness. It got to a point where I was like, I understand that his eyes are like so and so and her brothers are like so and so… It was like I was being reminded at every corner and I didn’t need those reminders at all. This got to a point where the content of the story was just dry and didn’t evolve or develop and as such the characters and their romance didn’t either, at least not to a satisfactory extent.

Ultimately, from a substance point of view, AGV fell short particularly in comparison to the author’s other novels. However, if I look at this book in isolation and ignore the issues with the content and writing, then it was pretty fun especially if you like very dramatic stories. If you’re a fan of high school/college romances, which I tend not to be, then this might be right up your alley. I just feel like I may have had higher expectations based on precedent.

Filled with drama and angst, A Gorgeous Villain was a pretty good continuation of this series with both highs and lows.

Overall, I had an ok time reading this book. I had high hopes for what it would be but it didn’t quite live up to my expectations. I really enjoyed the first half but the second was a little dull. The plot itself was good but the execution is where I had my issues. The writing was just much too repetitive, heavy on the description and long-winded. It did make me excited for the rest of this series and the rest of the side character’s stories though so that counts for something. Overall, because of the back and forth, I am giving A Gorgeous Villain 4 stars. I wavered between a 3.75 and a 4 but I settled on 4 because I never felt like DNFing or giving up on it. There was always something that kept me coming back and so I feel like for that, I’ve got to bump it up that little bit. I would recommend AGV to fans of forbidden, second-chance romance and any fan of Saffron A. Kent.

The Wild Mustang & Dancing Fairy – Saffron A. Kent (St. Mary’s Rebels #1.5)

Blurb

Calliope Thorne is a good girl. A straight-A student, a rule follower, and an aspiring ballerina.

But most of all, she’s a good sister to her four older brothers.

Brothers whom she loves and adores to pieces. Brothers who love and adore her to pieces in return.

And who hate just one and one thing only–Reed Jackson.

Rich, arrogant, and the most popular guy at Bardstown High, Reed is Callie’s brothers’ enemy and she has sworn to stay away from him.

Until one night when she wanders into the woods and finds herself in his clutches. A villain with pretty gray eyes and a seductive smirk.

Until he asks her to dance for him with a look in those eyes that makes her forget why falling for her brothers’ enemy is a bad idea.

Review

This little prequel novella has definitely made me that much more excited about A Gorgeous Villain!

I love Saffron A. Kent and A Gorgeous Villain has been a book that I’ve been eager to read ever since it was first announced. This novella was a perfect treat as I was able to get to know the characters and get a taste for what their story will be like. It has piqued my interest and I just know Callie and Reed are going to be epic. They have a great connection and the tension and angst between them is out of this world. Theirs is a sort of forbidden romance and the whole concept is incredibly engaging and exciting. I can’t wait to see how things progress between them and how they navigate their relationship with all of Callie’s brothers fighting it and of course their history. Gah, I’m just really pumped now for the real deal!

Quick, sweet and intense, The Wild Mustang and The Dancing Fairy sets the stage for what’ll surely be a fantastic forbidden, second-chance romance!

Overall, this was a wonderful prequel novella. There was a bit of repetition and lots of descriptions but it wasn’t too bad. I’m attributing this to the fact that this is an introductory book, but still. In any case, it didn’t affect my enjoyment too much because the story was really great. I am giving The Wild Mustang and The Dancing Fairy 4 stars and would recommend it to fans of forbidden, second-chance romance and any fan of Saffron A. Kent!

REVIEW:

Well, I’ve just found my newest obsession!

Bad Intentions officially marks the 25th book I’ve read by Ella Frank and if that doesn’t illustrate my unconditional love for this author, then I don’t know what does. From the moment Ella announced this duet, I was beyond excited. The premise was so fun and I knew I was going to be in for a hell of a ride! Gabe and Marcus definitely didn’t disappoint, in fact, they just might be up there in my top favourite Ella Frank relationships!

Every second of this book was fantastic, I couldn’t keep the smile off my face!

Quite honestly, I binged the heck out of this book and if it hadn’t been for the need to eat and just generally be a productive person, I could have stayed in bed all day reading it, it was that addictive. Ella Frank’s writing is truly something special and though I never forget how phenomenal her writing is when I’m not reading it when I do, it just has a way of blowing me away all over again like it’s my very first time reading her books. That right there is something amazing!

This book was so engaging and had me laughing out loud many times. The characters were so easy to fall for, I mean, I loved them before I even started reading! Of course, I knew Marcus from the Prime Time series but I definitely didn’t know him the way we get to know him in Bad Intentions so getting to discover this side of Mr. St James was lots of fun. Not only was he mature, serious and a total workaholic, there was also a side of him that was relaxed, fun and passionate. Marcus on the surface is not quite Marcus below the surface and seeing him come out of that shell was great. Gabe was perfect! He reminded of combinations of other Ella characters yet different. Gabe was young and full of life, with confidence for days and seemingly no filter, he isn’t afraid to go after what he wants. Gabe’s zeal for life and love made him impossible not to love!

Gabe and Marcus together were so damn hot! The between them was out of this world and the chemistry was excellent. Marcus and Gabe just got on really well despite their differences because they actually had quite a few things in common when it was all said and done. Gabe and Marcus had an immediate connection, one that was passionate, sexy and undeniable. These guys fit so well into each other’s lives even when everything about their individual lives should have suggested otherwise. Once they’d met, nothing was about to keep them apart and I loved that about them. I also loved that they didn’t fight their connection, they gave in to it for as long as it suited them but man, my emotions were at stake just waiting for the other shoe to drop.

While reading this book, I seriously contemplated where I’d rank these guys in terms of my favourite Ella Frank relationships. I felt so strongly for them, but I feel that way about all her couples (and throuples 😉). However, there was something about these guys that gave me serious flashbacks to Tate and Logan who are my OG m/m romance favourites. And by the way, they make an appearance so imagine my total excitement whenever either of them had page time! Anyways, back to it, yeah, I definitely think these guys have skyrocketed to the top and might be in my top three after the Temptation and Confessions series. In any case, Bad Intentions ended on one hell of a note and I can’t wait to see where things go next.

Bad Intentions was sexy, fun and absolutely addictive, Good Intentions can’t come out fast enough!

Overall, I loved every single bit of this book and can’t wait for more in the world of Marcus and Gabe. Bad Intentions was everything I love in an Ella Frank book and any book in general, so it’s no shock that I am giving it 5 stars and would recommend it to fans of m/m romance!

ARC: Four – Sara Cate & Rachel Leigh Book Review

BLURB:

They say family is a circle of strength.

But when mine is ripped away from me at the hands of a monster,

My strength is all that’s left.

I’ll give my last breath before they take anything else from me.

Even if I’m the one they wanted all along.

Find Silas Black.

Those were my father’s last words.

So I did.

Only, I found so much more than just a man who was prepared to help me get my revenge.

I found a tortured soul who in return gave me hope.

But I also found his broken sons.

One hates me.

One desires me.

And Silas wants to save me.

They say revenge is a dish best served cold, but If I keep getting caught up in the heat of the moment, I’ll be my own demise.

REVIEW:

I am a fan of a well-written RH and this one sounded very promising so I was excited to give it a shot!

I have previously read one other book by Sara Cate which I adored but this was my first time reading Rachel Leigh. For the most part, I really enjoyed this book. There was action, suspense, angst, lots of steam and overall, quite entertaining. In the end, it wasn’t a knock-out for me, but it was still quite enjoyable.

The first half of the book was fantastic, in the second half, things dropped off.

When I first started reading Four, I was obsessed. I thought the characters were amazing and I was so interested to see how things would develop between them. Iris was a great heroine who was fierce and not afraid to stand up for herself, but who was also not afraid to show vulnerability. Silas was the first of the three heroes that I took a liking to. He was calm, comforting and a total catch. Then there were Baron and Gabriel who were both as intimidating as Silas was but they were much more blunt and forward in expressing it. I liked the underlying sweetness in Gabriel and the affection of Baron though they both hid this quite well for much of the book.

Iris had good connections with most of them but as is often an issue with RH, some relationships were better developed than others. For instance, Iris and Silas’s relationship was much more believable because their connection was explored right away. Gabriel came somewhat later and there was no chemistry beyond physically for a while and then Baron came much much later and was similar to Gabriel. Quite honestly, I didn’t quite buy into emotional chemistry between Iris and any of the guys. It was much more focused on the physical and again, as is the issue with a lot of RHs, the relationships were all slightly underdeveloped and didn’t quite get the page time to be fully fleshed out.

Nevertheless, the physical aspects of the relationships were very hot and very well done. In this area, the authors excelled. When I came to terms with the fact that I wouldn’t be getting much in the emotional department, I was able to enjoy the story for what it was and I didn’t really have too much of an issue with the romance going forward.

My main issue was with the writing which kind of dropped off at around 60%. Things took a turn I wasn’t expecting, which was fine, in fact, I really enjoyed that but afterward, things happened really quickly and were a bit messy. The resolution for what happened was rushed and I didn’t like that at all. I felt like at least this part needed to be stretched out longer because, after an event like that, things shouldn’t be resolved in the blink of an eye. From that point onward, I couldn’t look at the story or characters in the same way. It just felt lacking in some way and unfortunately, that persisted until the end.

Steamy, action-packed and thrilling, Four is a fun and gritty RH romance.

Overall, I had some issued with this book but generally speaking it kept me interested all the way through and was a pretty good read. I look forward to reading more by these authors soon. I am giving Four 3.75 stars and would recommend it to fans of RH romance with a bit of a dark-ish tone.

ARC: Distorted – Nyla K. Book Review (Alabaster Penitentiary #1)

162084887_10158667479589022_3550631349828097184_o

Blurb

This is Alabaster Penitentiary…

Where they send you when the world thinks you’re dead. And trust me, you’ll wish you were.
We’re the stain on society. The freaks, the creeps, your favorite Netflix documentaries come to life.
They lock us up and throw away the key, because we deserve it.

But not me. I’m just a lowly bank robber. I don’t belong here, surrounded by psychopaths and killers with no remorse… At least, I don’t think I do.
Getting by unscathed is my top priority. Unfortunately for me and my fellow prisoners, those in charge are more dangerous than we are.

You see, the guards run the show, and I seem to have caught the attention of the most twisted one.
He has a name, but it might as well be Officer. We move around one another like a sun and a moon, revolving in an axis of confused lust and torment until the truth is distorted, and the thing I once feared becomes that which I crave; my vile addiction, somehow so exquisite.
Reality warps in the dungeon, and I’m left wondering which prison is worse…the one holding my body, or my mind.

**Distorted is the first book in the Alabaster Penitentiary series. It is a full M/M romance, with HEA. Each book in this series is technically a standalone, though they are interconnected, so it will be recommended to read in order, as references to this story will be made in future books.
Distorted is intended for mature audiences and open-minded readers ONLY! If you prefer the same old story, this book won’t be for you. This story is dark, probably darker for some than others, so please proceed with caution, and if you’re easily triggered, steer clear.

Review

This book was a bit of a mixed bag for me.

Honestly, Distorted started off really strong. It was my first time reading Nyla K. and initially I was enjoying the writing, the characters and the budding romance. However, at about 60%, things started to go sideways and ultimately, I ended up not loving the book as much as I had anticipated.

Distorted had an interesting premise…

I was immediately drawn to this book because A) it’s m/m and B) it’s a prison romance. I had high hopes because it sounded like such a wild ride with mystery, suspense and lots of steam. For the first 60% of the story, I was all in. The writing was engaging, intriguing and kept me wanting more. The author did a good job of establishing the characters and when they first interacted, I was hooked. There was some real chemistry there despite the dubious nature of their relationship but the connection was definitely there. I became genuinely very invested in the romance and was rooting for it so hard but then bam, things went downhill really damn fast.

160954327_10158650379059022_4831615026007954069_o

Now, I respect the author wanting spoilers to be kept out of reviews and so I will absolutely do that. I think unsolicited spoilers can definitely be a bummer so I’ll try as much as possible to articulate my thought without explicitly giving too much away.

So, at around the middle-ish point of the book is when a pretty dramatic twist takes place and honestly, it just didn’t work for me. Things became incredibly convoluted, frankly confusing and I completely lost touch with the story, the characters and the romance. Anything that I had grown to like in the first half quickly dissipated and I was left reeling by the turn of events. I understand where the author was going with this and I can imagine the shock value was something she’d planned for but this twist kind of tore down everything that had been built up in the first part of the book. The best way I can describe my feelings is that I felt like I read two books in one and that wasn’t a great feeling.

161019486_10158650378754022_8715390171511320168_o

Not only did this twist take the story in a completely different direction, but it also left some plot holes in the story. I know that in the author’s note she explained away these holes but without that author’s note, those holes were significant and disruptive for the overall development of the book. I mean you can’t purposefully neglect something and then rely on a note to explain it away. There needs to be some sort of resolution within the book.

Really, I felt like this twist and everything that came after it was just too convenient and cheapened the once strong storyline. What felt like a story on the right track in terms of development took a turn for an insta-love ridden story in the second half. It was pretty dramatic and far too expedient.

161734582_10158650378714022_3181230093049524386_o

That’s all I’ll say on that but if you want specifics, feel free to reach out. I had a hard time getting through this book and in the end, I couldn’t even read the book in the character’s voices, I had completely lost touch and interest in everything to do with this book. I understand the subject matter is crucial for the story but in this case, it was used in a very extreme and convenient way, it sort of just felt like a cop-out. Also, this was described as a dark romance but it really didn’t feel all that dark to me, like at all. Maybe the dub-con was meant to be dark but really the tone of the story did not substantiate that.

Distorted was promising in the beginning but fell short in the end.

Overall, I liked the author’s writing and that has made me interested in reading more from her. The other characters in this book also really piqued my interest so I’ll be looking forward to their potential stories. However, when it comes to the way this book was structured, the plot, pacing and development, it really lacked the finesse to be a truly amazing, impactful book. I am giving Distorted 3.5 stars and would recommend it to fans of m/m romance.

ARC: Pure Seduction – Ella Frank Book Review (Chamberlin Brothers #1) + Excerpt

PS - BT banner-2

Pure Seduction, an all-new emotional second-chance romance from USA Today bestselling author Ella Frank is available now!

Small towns are definitely not for me. Probably because I was born in one, raised in one, and eventually run out of one. The understanding was that I would one day return to Chamberlin California. After all, it is my namesake. What my father didn’t count on however, was that once he sent me away, I would never come back—at least not until he was gone.

Which brings me to now, his wake, at the family winery that was supposed to be mine. It also brings me to her. The sweet girl I left behind. The girl who has since grown into the most beautiful woman I’ve ever laid eyes on—Laurel Anderson.

She’s looking at me as though she wishes I was the one she watched get buried this morning. But she’s out of luck. I’m alive and kicking. I’m also stuck in this town with nothing to do but wait until the will is read.

Well, nothing to do but see if I can seduce the pure and passionate Laurel, and change that anger I see in her eyes to something just as fiery…desire.

***

The last time I saw Noah Chamberlin, I was a doe-eyed innocent and he was the boy of my dreams. My future was all planned out down to the wedding dress, until one morning I woke up and he was gone.

You’d think after all these years, I’d feel the same blind indignation and rage that has haunted me since that day. Instead, the second I set eyes on him again, I felt something altogether unwanted and unexpected—lust.

If the rumors are true, he’s only going to be in Chamberlin for a few days. I can handle that, as long as he stops looking at me as though he’s thinking about the last time we were together.

But when Noah’s forced to stay and run the family business, it puts us in dangerously close proximity. And in a town this small, that can only mean one thing—trouble.

Review

Ella Frank is my go-to author for absolutely everything!

Pure Seduction marks the 24th book I’ve read by Ella Frank and all I can say is she is insanely talented. Her stories never cease to suck me right and have me chomping at the bit for more. Despite having read so many of her books, this is the first time I’ve read an M/F by this author and it was fantastic! I’m ready to binge all of her M/F that I haven’t gotten a chance to read yet because this author knows how to write a truly entertaining book!

I didn’t really know what to expect going into this book but I knew I was in for a really amazing story and a unique setting to boot!

Pure Seduction was great. I’ve been in a slump for the last little while and was looking for a pick me up, a book that was fun and exciting and this book definitely succeeded. Noah and Laurel were great characters who complemented each other so well. They were a great couple and their romance was one that I had a lot of fun seeing develop over the book. I was immediately interested in their dynamic and seeing how things would play out and it was one hell of a ride. These two just got on so well, they bantered back and forth and their connection was quite literally absolutely undeniable. These two made sparks fly and I was all for it! The ending was lovely and left me super excited for the rest of this series so all I can say is, Pure Seduction was an amazing start to an exciting new series by my favourite unicorn author who can rock any book!

Sexy, fun and sweet, Pure Seduction was a great introduction to this new series!

Overall, I had a great time reading this book and really can’t wait for more. The characters were amazing, their romance was beautiful and the story really played on my emotions. I am giving Pure Seduction 5 stars and would recommend it to fans of second-chance romance!

Excerpt

“Laurel Anderson.”
My heart all but stopped at the sound of my name in that smooth, seductive timbre, and my fingers tightened on the handle.
“Hi.” Brilliant. After all these years, that was what came out of my mouth.
A smile slowly curved Noah’s lips, as though he knew I was tongue-tied, and I wanted to kick myself—or him—for it.
“Hi yourself.”
I swallowed and tried to remember that somewhere inside my head I possessed a brain. Now if I could just locate it, that would be fantastic. “I, uh, I didn’t know you were coming today.”

“No? Everyone else in town seemed to.”
“Well, you know how it goes. You can’t rely on everything you hear.”
“Ah. So you heard—you just didn’t believe it.”
“I didn’t really think about it either way.” Liar. “I’m sorry for your loss, though. Harry was—”
“An A-grade bastard?”
My eyes widened at the cool edge to Noah’s voice. It was a tone I’d never heard from him before. But then again, I didn’t know this man, so I had no point of reference.
“That seems harsh, huh?”
“It seems…” Noah’s eyes locked on me with an intensity I felt all the way to my bones. “Honest.”
He shifted the wine bottle from one hand to the other, then he held it up by the neck and asked, “A good year?”
I focused on the label, a 2012 Pinot Noir. “It was a great year.”
Noah nodded and turned the bottle around so he could look at it again. “And you should know, or so I’m told. You manage this place now.”
I wondered who had told him. His mother? Or one of his siblings? I’d never imagined a career in the wine business, and I certainly hadn’t imagined one here at his family’s winery. But circumstances had left me little choice, and now I couldn’t imagine doing anything else.
“I do. I’m also the head sommelier.”
Noah let out a sound of disbelief that made my spine stiffen. I was good at my job—damn good at it.

“I hope that won’t be a problem for you.”
“A problem?” Noah shook his head. “No. I was just thinking how my family hasn’t changed at all. They still like their secrets.”
The temperature in the room dropped back to arctic, and as I was about to hightail it out of there, Noah took a step forward. I plastered my back to the door and, cursing myself for showing my hand—and my nerves—counted back from ten before daring to look him in the eye.
That was a mistake. I recognized those eyes and the thick lashes that curtained them. I also recognized the look in them right now. It was one of curiosity and interest.
“I wasn’t so sure about coming back here when I showed up earlier.”
His gaze roved over my face, as though he were searching for the girl he once knew, and I wondered if he saw parts of her in there.
“But suddenly I find myself even happier that that asshole up and died. Otherwise I’d never have known you were here.”
I wasn’t surprised in the slightest that my working here had been kept quiet. Harry had worked really hard to remove me from Noah’s life. He wasn’t about to tell him I was still around.
“Well, um, I don’t want to hold you up anymore, and I need to get back to your mother’s guests.” I turned to open the door, but when I felt his hand on my shoulder, my feet froze.
“Looking to make a quick escape again, Bonnie?”

I closed my eyes and for a second allowed myself to remember the first time he’d ever called me that. Then I quickly shoved it aside, not willing to allow in the emotions and vulnerabilities those kind of memories would bring.
“Do you blame me?”
There was a pause, and the tension simmering in the air made it even more imperative that I get out of there right now.
“No. I guess I don’t. But before you go?”
“Yes?” As his hand fell away, I let out a silent sigh of relief.
“I was wondering if you could tell me the best place to stay in town?”
